Co-op has widened its partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to move to the cloud to help drive down its carbon footprint and support its business growth.
The expansion will see the supermarket upgrade its IT systems from a traditional data centre model to a fully managed, scalable cloud environment, powered by the information technology company’s Enterprise Cloud.
The move will help Co-op by giving it “a foundation for future capabilities and growth”, while lowering its energy usage and supporting its sustainability goals.

The Co-operative group chief digital information officer Rob Elsey said: “We are delighted to extend our strategic partnership with TCS in enabling us to meet Co-op’s business objectives and serving and supporting our member-owners who are at the very heart of our business.
“They have been a great partner, aligned with our growth priorities and future-proofed our infrastructure as we set on the course for continued future expansion – supporting change and transformation in how we work as a business and in our cloud journey.”
The news comes after Co-op recently revealed it was installing more than 200 secure till kiosks, locked cabinets for spirits and AI technology to monitor self-checkouts in a bid to tackle a rise in retail crime.
The move followed the convenience chain reporting shoplifting incidents in its stores had rocketed 48% last year, while abuse and harassment cases had surged 44%.
